Many a day is spent looking around second hand book shops as new ones in this part of the world are 3-4x the cost of them back home. But also I enjoy it as you end up picking some random titles which normally you would just pass or not even find – as you might be able to tell from my book list! I don’t know if knowing how to make coca gum will ever come in handy but finding out that Abraham Lincoln was the first American to drink Boliviain Wine Cola – yip that’s wine which was fortified with coca! When prohibition came into effect they dropped the wine and the alcohol and it was know as Boliviain Cola or what we now call Coca-Cola. I hope I get that question In a pub quiz some day!
Ive found an autobiography today and the opening page is this…
“I enter a whorehouse with the same interest as I do the British museum or the Metropolitan-in the same spirit of curiosity. Here are the works of a man, here is an art of man, here is his eternal pursuit of gold and pleasure. This doesn’t mean that if I go to La Scala to hear Carmen I want to get up on the stage and participate. I do not. Neither do I always participate in a fine representative national whorehouse–but I must see it as a spectacle, an offering, a symptom of a nation.”
I’ll let you know who it is when I’m done…..
My Wicked Wicked Ways – a bio by Errol Flynn.
A snap shot;
He.. is from Tasmania not Ireland
..shot and killed an man itself defense
..never qualified from school with any thing of note
..owned an original painting from van gogh and gauguin
..and had to sell them because his ex-wife gets a boat load of cash to maintain her and his kid – until the day she marries another man!
..was charged on five separate counts of statutory rape – cleared from all!
..bummed a lift from Sydney to London
..signed up for two wars
This list goes on, the man is a wonder and – well it goes without saying, a total womaniser.
The book in my eyes is worth 5 stars!
