Car’s are like Shoes – you need more than one!

Looking at the map all I could see was a yellow band of squiggle cutting through a number of National Parks this should be great, what I got was better than exceptional and something for someone like me, it was automotive heaven – miles upon miles of perfect black tarmac laid so smooth and flat it was like a ten bowling lane. On and off cambers like the Indianapolis speedway, hairpin bends so tight you think your going to turn back on yourself and just acre’s and acre’s of green land, tree’s and rivers running alongside you topped off with a sky so blue that a 1.5ltr of factor 30 suncream is not going to last long enough – its one of those roads that when you get to the end you have to turn around and drive it again!

Time for me to have another little day dream, which car would I need to do this road justice? OK the previous car lot included a Honda S2000, with its 9k rpm rev band, rifle bolt gear change and a convertible is a good option but flawed, its too hot and your face and head will resemble an Irish man in Spain for the first time on holiday – lobster red! Also it doesn’t have traction control so when you take a few liberties in the hairpin’s at any moment its going to say enough and spit you out sideways, impale you to a tree or upside down in a creek where if you don’t drown a crock will have you! No a S2000 is good but flawed!

Now an BMW M3 on the other hand would be good, 3.2ltr straight six with a bucket of torque and the safety of traction control but with all that power and a speed limit of 100kph it will leave you frustrated then in jail with a heavy fine and the potential of a very sore arse!

The dilemma as to which car would I have in Austrraaeellieeaa is on going and my pondering will continue for some time so I should add a blog about it – some day I’ll get around to it when I’m stuck on public transport!  However for the moment I got an idea as to a style of car but not a make or model, you see it needs to be cool and the option of a drop top would be nice. Purist’s will say it has to be a coupe but not here you don’t really need the body of a car to be super stiff – 100kph remember!  My thoughts at the moment are a classic car with the choice of been a convertible or coupe, it has to be built to last and can be used without breaking the bank when you look at it or think of turning the key. So rule out anything Italian – no arguments, this is a head conversation not a heart thought or moment I am having!

In my book that leaves American, British or German marques.  First on the list American no matter how cool a 390GT Fastback Mustang is, you are not and never will be as cool as Steve McQueen and an AC Cobra, well if an S2000 is not the right one why even think of something which is about a gazillion times more brutal!! British well it would have to be a Series I E-type Jag or an Aston DB4 both of which you should have in a coupe form only! They look better, yes a convertible E or DB4 will make an man go weak at the knees but its just not right, originally built as a coupe therefor lopping the roof off is going against the grain as to what the designer was looking for in the first place, also after all that you then need to add a lot of metal to make sure it doesn’t act like a magic carpet when you go around corners thus making it more heavy!

OK what have the Germans got to offer Porsche or Mercedes, again 911’s will spit you out and kill you in a creek! I would adore a 190SL or a 300SL but the fear of ‘Roo jumping out and wiping the front of the car out is just too much for any insurance premium and my nerves also I cannot stand seeing a car damaged, so for a road like the Waterfall Way/Highway 78 and on a day like today my choice is a 280 SL, I’m sure ‘The Autophile’ could help with a better image and have a comment or two about my choice but a silver 280SL  would have to be the choice it covers all boxes. It’s uber Cool, practical as it has a boot and glove box and a bit of room behind the seats, it can also come with a hardtop and still it looks good! Finally its German so it works – all the time, and because you are looking cool and taking in the views it won’t kill you or the bank balance – that quickly!

Could this be the ideal car for Aussie roads?
